Strong start to 2022

It was great to see so many of you enjoy the list of Dutch pirates heard in England during 2021 I posted last week. And the good news is that the new year has started strongly with heaps of activity at the top of the MW band. So, without further ado, here's what I've been listening to, along with plenty of observations, together with some recordings, photos and even a video:

Observations

    • There was a nice surprise today when I flicked on the receiver at 10am not really expecting to be able to hear any Dutch pirate signals - and there was Digitaal coming in pretty well. A move down the band and there was Utopia with a weaker, but audible signal. To add to that pair I was also able to hear Ethervogel, Cowboy Gerard and Kaaiman. They were all weak but just about detectable which is very rare at this time of day.
    • By just after midday I could still hear stations and instead of fading out they had actually become stronger! I heard Mustang on 1619 kHz - another one rather than the one who is also active on shortwave - Toulouse, Wilskracht, Nachtzwerver and Eigen Risico all before 2pm. It seems propagation is becoming more and more unpredictable but, when it allows listening windows several hours after sunrise and many hours before sunset I’m not complaining!

        Observations

        • Had a fun day listening for a good few hours from the afternoon and through into the evening today. There was plenty to hear, and one of the highlights was catching Curacao as this station has been around for many years and was a regular when I used to listen a lot during the 1990s.
        • As well as some well-known names, new station Luka was also active and I was able to find out plenty about this pirate after getting in touch with the operator. He named his station after the Irish singer-songwriter Luka Bloom. He was spinning some records on 1611 kHz and running 40 watts of power, so was doing very well to deliver a listenable signal to my location in England before sunset. He's using an inverted L antenna, which is becoming more and more popular in the Netherlands, and he sent me these photos of the set-up to share with you, including a great shot of the studio:

        Observations

          • It’s always a bit of a challenge for me to catch the Dutch pirate signals on 1.6 MHz as long before sunset as possible, so it was good to be able to hear the carrier of Digitaal on 1695 kHz today just after midday, nearly four hours before the sun went down. I couldn’t make out any music as the signal was so weak, but the carrier was definitely audible. Fast-forward just over three hours and he was back on air and arriving here with the maximum sinpo of 55555!
          • Propagation conditions remained good throughout the rest of the day and there were some stunning signals to be heard. Dikke Betta and Columbia also really stood out, but Relmus was doing very well indeed with the transmitter previously used by Wadloper. It was great to hear him back on air on a Friday night - reminds me of those fun weekly broadcasts he used to do a few years ago and of the times I’ve been in the studio with him. Here's a short video showing the great modulation on the oscilloscope in the studio:

          • Reception of Tower would also have been very good but for the other station also occupying 1620 kHz for much of the time he was on air. As both transmitters were on exactly the same frequency, there was no hetrodyne, but instead the stations took turns to peak and the rest of the time were mixing together. I didn’t manage to work out which was the other station.
          • Studio 19 was coming in clearly today, even better the second time later in the evening, while Al Capone had some lovely peaks to give reception better than usual.
          • There was a fascinating end to the day when I tuned around in-band and found a signal on 1494 kHz. The station I usually catch on this frequency is Buzz FM, but today I heard Rock Radio AM, and with a good signal too. The broadcast sounded as though it was live and the email address rockradioam@yahoo.com was given out. It’s really quite special to find MW pirate radio from the UK in 2022 given how little there has been in recent years, and I look forward to hearing this station again soon.

          Observations

            • When I tuned in to Digitaal on 1670 kHz today at just after 3.30 local time, the signal was weak. However, fast-forward by around 40 minutes and the station was blasting in with a sinpo peaking at 45444, showing conditions to be particularly good, which was no coincidence with the sun having just set. This time of the day opens up grey-line propagation where signals travel across the twilight zone between day and night, often allowing surprising reception.
            • Rietvink from the Veluwe switched on his transmitter a few minutes later to spin a few records and he was also coming in well with a sinpo around 35333. It is usually early in the morning when I hear this station, so it made a nice change to hear him at this later time of day.
            • Torpedojager popped up on his usual frequency of 1636 kHz at dinnertime as he tested the equipment ahead of his Thursday morning breakfast show on the same channel.
            • There was plenty of other action as the night-time arrived with transmissions from high-power pirates like Boomerang and low-power operations such as Polka and Ethervogel

            1. Thank you David for logging Radio Zeewolf. When I am on 1620 or 1615 kHz is the coil antenna in the low position at 7 m.
              Greetings, Herman.
