There was some very sad news last week when I heard of the death of veteran and iconic MW pirate Zender Johan at the age of 81. He sadly died having contracted the coronavirus.
Johan had been broadcasting on MW for many years and was renowned for having a very big signal. His 3kw transmitter would regularly be switched on to give reception reports early in the morning, and that is often when I heard him.
Although I never met Johan, his voice was instantly recognisable to me and I used to enjoy listening to him coming in loud and clear here in England. As you can see, he was an old-style pirate - no computers, SDRs and mobile phones in this studio - trusty equipment, lovingly cared for and put to good use for many, many years.
We wish Johan's family well for the future and strength at such a sad time. The radio waves will be missing a famous voice, but we still have some recordings to listen to from time to time:
