The wind and rain is battering the windows as I sit in a brand new radio room at the top of the house updating the blog. I'm listening to Nachtzwerver - the Night Tramp - playing classic 70s rock on 1655 kHz and drinking a very nice chocolate stout (Stoutzilla 20 from Unbarred - it's a good one, Maurits!).
It's been a very busy week at this side, but I've managed plenty of radio listening, enjoying some much better propagation conditions on shortwave during the daytime before turning my attention to MW during late afternoons and evenings. And here is what I've heard from the Netherlands:

Observations
There were some interesting catches today, starting off with one nice and early at just before 2.30pm in the UK when I heard Ultra coming through on 1690 kHz. This was the first time I had heard the station, who was doing well to get across the North Sea well before sunset.
I don’t hear Interpol too often, but he had a strong signal, first on 1638 kHz and then on 1611 kHz while qsoing with Witte Duif, another one I don’t hear very often. Looking back at what logs I do have for this station, 1616 kHz appears to be his regular frequency.
Great to catch Avia a couple of hours after the sun had gone. He was putting in what I think must be the best signal I have heard from him, with some super peaks on 1648 kHz.
There was an enjoyable qso later in the evening when Meteoor was spinning some Christmas music while qsoing with Vonkenboer.

Observations
The highlight of today’s activity for me was an appearance from Poema on 1615 kHz. I met the station operator a couple of years back when we spent a summer’s afternoon with Barones, Edelkampioen and Salo. He was kind enough to show me all around his place, studios new and old, and I have since chatted to him regularly on WhatsApp, so it’s always a pleasure to hear him on air. He wasn’t running a huge amount of power but his signal was still very good over here and it was a pleasure to listen. Just a short time after he closed down, he was kind enough to send over this smart qsl card

I enjoyed catching the signal of Toulouse this evening. On one of my early trips to the Netherlands back in the 1990s I met the station operator when I visited his studio together with Utopia. Hard to think around 25 years have since passed, but we are all still enjoying the hobbby. Not sure I speak any more Dutch nowadays than I did back then, although I might understand a little more.

Observations
I was idly tuning around MW at just after midday today when I heard some music on 1611 kHz. It was only distant, but it was there nonetheless. And then I heard the well-known voice of Radio Utopia. I stayed listening for a few minutes until he closed down. It turns out Utopia wasn’t running full power during the broadcast, so to hear him at midday is impressive.
It is very nice hobby if you are into it. The music puts me in a good mood. I flick about and listen to any I can hear, I like the Dutch Accordion music and somtimes you get some electrronic music stations as well. Always interesting... there was a good one playing unusual synth music recently. Gives you the old pirate radio feeling. I like when there is a big variety of music. keep us entertained over lock down this Christmas. Thanks Dutch MW Pirates ... we love you over here in the UK !
ReplyDeleteCouldn't agree more. The music often raises a smile and there's always something to listen to. Hope you had a good Christmas - and keep on stopping by the blog. Cheers
