Killer signals

With autumn well and truly here and winter not far away, there is now only a relatively short window each day during which I cannot hear the Dutch pirates on MW at my inland location in the UK.

At the height of summer and with the long days there is much less scope for listening, but with Dutch pirate signals on MW now audible until around 0830 UTC and then again from around 1400 UTC it is possible to hear lots of stations each day.

Just take today, for example. A Monday evening and I managed to hear 21 different pirates from all around the Netherlands. Take a look at the list and compare your reception with a few of my recordings below:

Observations

  • Well that was a very busy evening with propagation at its peak for reception here at around 1800 UTC. The first stations heard were Anton and Vrijevogel, followed by an enormous signal from Drukstroomjager. Equally as strong was Spanningzoeker, while Pirate Jantje (Marianne) was also doing very well while testing a different transmitter to the one he usually uses for his Tuesday evening broadcasts.
  • Good to catch a few different stations today, including Astronaut using just 90 watts of power, Alpenjager from Groningen, Dr Bloe and Johnny Pecon - and there was an appearance from Johnny Camaro on 1638 kHz. I can't remember the last time I heard this station, so a very warm welcome back to the air - good to hear you again! And the same goes for Electron. It's been a while since I heard him whispering into the airwaves so it was a pleasure to catch his signal this evening.
  • Have a listen to some of the recordings I made tonight:

Observations

  • I was up early today and rewarded with some pirate activity. Noordster is a Sunday morning regular, and he was on air again today with a great signal on this side of the North Sea. Check out the recording below. His broadcasts are often followed by a qso, and this time Musky and Eigen Risico came on air to pass on reception reports.
  • Good to hear Matrix on air for the first time in a good while. He was using his regular channel of 1670 kHz for a lengthy music programme that also featured an appearance in the studio from Mexicaan.
