Observations

• The skip was again in favour of the Balkan stations. A big fan of those stations is the operator of Vrolijke Mijnwerker, and he duly popped up on 1700 kHz to call them for a qso. Their signals were arriving earlier than last night and were again strong. They often favour frequencies in the region of 1.7 MHz, which is why the Happy Miner chose that channel to call them. It certainly makes a change to hear these different pirates when the propagation allows, but they are incredibly difficult to follow and their qso style is such that they often switch on their transmitters for a few seconds, speak and then switch off!

• It was a particularly interesting evening tonight. Not because of the Dutch activity but because of the proliferation of Balkan stations audible - and some with incredibly strong signals. It is no exaggeration to say that they were everywhere, all possible because of the propagation conditions.

Observations

• Interesting to hear Tower on air for the first time in a while, especially once Augusta had signed on for the evening on 1611 kHz - there was quite a tussle with each station taking it in turn to peak. However, by just before midnight in the UK (0100 in the Netherlands), Tower was booming and no interference as Augusta had disappeared from the frequency. But it was closedown by that time and the party station ended for the day with much fun seemingly had by all in the studio!
• I often wonder where the Dutch pirate radio scene will be in any ten or 20 years, so it was nice to hear the young children of Vonkenboer and De Klok in the studios today during the qso with Caballero, Mebo 2, De Klok and Zeewolf. The pirates of the future!

Observations

• Mike Radio was the first station to be heard today. While he was not ultra-strong, the signal was hugely stable with absolutely no fading, making him very much like a local station. Really enjoyed listening to this.

Observations

• Another fine afternoon and evening of listening which started early again. First up I heard Spakenburg testing on 1638 and 1656 kHz before the band became busier later in the afternoon. Propagation conditions were on my side and before the sun went down I had heard plenty of stations, including De Klap for the first time in a good while.
• After the sun had gone down I heard Torpedojager from North West Overijssel, not to be confused with the station of the same name from Twente who broadcasts every Thursday morning on 1636 kHz.
• Possibly the most interesting catch came just before 11pm local time in the UK when Kristal and Monte Carlo were qsoing with Croatian pirate Tornado, who gave Monte Carlo a reception report of S9 +30db!
• A subject that often comes up for discussion is why Dutch pirates on 1.6 MHz often transmit in such close proximity to each other on the band. A good example of that came tonight with Nachtzwerver broadcasting on 1647 kHz, Moby Dick on 1652 and Yogi Bear on 1655, all with music programmes. One of the great things about AM pirate radio in the modern era, however, is that many stations - although not all - are using audio filters and restricting their bandwidth to just a few kilohertz which means that although it is not ideal, it is still possible to separate stations, especially when using SDRs rather than traditional communication receivers. A further point to remember is that there are in the region of 300 Dutch pirates currently active on MW, mostly between 1611 kHz and 1670 kHz. That’s not many frequencies available if leaving the standard 9 kHz between each station, so you can soon see why the band becomes congested, especially on a Saturday night when more and more pirates fancy playing some music or having a chat.

Observations

• I was sitting alongside my radios at just after midday today and was idly turning around 1.6 MHz. I didn’t expect to hear anything so I was shocked to catch a signal and music coming in pretty well. It turned out to be Digitaal, who was spinning a few records and later had a chat with Scotland, who was considerably weaker but still audible over here.
